Learn more about Suzie's CBD Treats for Cats!

The gentleness and cuddliness of cats make them amazing companions and great additions to any family.

Sometimes, however, cats become nervous and lose their snuggly cat-titude. They may become aloof, shy, or picky with their food. Other times they may display mobility issues and flexibility loss, especially as they grow older.

Inflammation, chronic pain, and stress can take away from your cat’s happiness and quality of life. CBD may help maintain your cat’s wellness and be a helpful tool in your cat’s health routine.

CBD Oil for Cats

Cannabis contains hundreds of cannabinoids, of which CBD and THC are the most abundant. Hemp is a type of cannabis that has been selectively grown to contain high CBD density but only traces of THC—the psychoactive cannabinoid that is responsible for a sense of “high.” With this in mind, by only having trace amounts, this means that hemp will not have that effect on your pet.

CBD is non-addictive and non-psychoactive to animals, including humans, dogs, cats, and horses.. CBD oil from hemp contains high quantities of CBD but only traces of THC. The legal threshold for THC in the United States is 0.3%. Such tiny concentrations of THC are perfectly safe for both humans and animals, and have been shown to enhance the effectiveness of CBD.

Benefits of CBD for Cats

Studies suggest that CBD displays anti-inflammatory [1], antioxidant [2], anti-anxiety [3], and pain-relieving [4] qualities.

That’s why an increasing number of vets are exploring CBD’s potential for pets. A 2018 study on how CBD is used by vets concluded that “The most commonly used CBD formulations were oil/extract and edibles. These were most helpful in providing analgesia for chronic and acute pain, relieving anxiety and decreasing seizure frequency/severity” [6].

Many of these findings have been studied on humans and various animals. Research on dogs and cats is sparser, yet promising, and suggests similar effects thanks to CBD’s interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The Endocannabinoid System and CBD

All animals with backbones have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining the body’s natural balance. The ECS controls mood, appetite, and pain perception, among many other functions. To do so, it works with cannabinoids and their respective receptors. When something is out of balance, the ECS releases cannabinoids to attach to their respective receptors and alert cells.

CBD interacts with this endocannabinoid system in a gentle, indirect way. CBD shows great affinity to one of the human cannabinoids. However, instead of working directly on the receptors, it seems to nudge the ECS to make better and more efficient use of its own cannabinoids. This is the reason why it could take a few days for CBD to make its presence felt: its effects are discreet and smooth.

How Can CBD Help My Cat?

Suzie’s CBD Treats may help fend off your cat’s anxiety and nervousness. Just like humans, cats can experience anxiety and stress, particularly when they get unsettled from their routine. A new home, an addition to the family, routine trips to the vet, or even a bath can take their toll and cause anxiety to your cat. CBD may help take the edge off your cat’s nervousness and help it maintain its calm and happy disposition.

Likewise, mobility issues and joint stiffness can hinder your cat’s flexibility and agility. CBD for cats may help maintain your cat’s healthy joints while keeping inflammation at bay. Studies on arthritis suggest that CBD may help fend off the condition [7].

Some cats can be choosy and particular with food. If your cat displays diminished appetite, we first recommend that you eliminate the possibility of any health issues that need to be addressed by a vet. After doing so, you may help your cat regain its appetite with CBD oil. Because of cannabinoids found in full-spectrum CBD oil such as cannabigerol (CBG), adding full-spectrum CBD oil to your cat’s regiment may improve their appetite and give them back their taste for food [8].

Finally, CBD can help preserve your cat’s  silky coat. The ECS regulates skin cell growth and differentiation. Thanks to CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects on skin cells, CBD oil for cats may help support skin health, thus fending off the scratching and itching that threaten your cat’s beautiful coat.

CBD Dosage for Cats

While there is currently no recommended dosage from the FDA or any veterinarian association, studies suggest that CBD is safe and well-tolerated by cats, even at large doses [9].

Some research suggests that cats may require a lower dosage compared to dogs, as they seem to absorb CBD more slowly [10]. It is generally suggested to “start low, go slow”: start with a low dosage of 1mg of CBD per 10 pounds of weight split into two daily doses. We recommend giving CBD time to act on your cat’s system  rather than expecting an instant effect. CBD interacts gently and indirectly, meaning it may take a few days to take effect.. If you don’t see any noticeable changes after 1 week of dosing twice a day, feel free to up the dosage .5 mgs at a time.

When given too high of a dose, your cat may experience unwanted side effects such as lethargy and drowsiness, excessive licking and salivation, dry mouth and nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. If your cat experiences any of these, we first recommend making sure the CBD you have bought is formulated for pets and contains a THC level below 0.3%, like all of our Suzie’s CBD Treats products

We always recommend giving your cats CBD oil made specifically for them rather than human CBD oil. CBD oil for humans often contains artificial sweeteners, alcohol, or other ingredients that may be toxic for animals. Suzie’s CBD Treats have been specifically designed so that the CBD concentration and all ingredients are specifically tailored to cats to make sure our CBD cat oils and treats are perfect for your cat’s endocannabinoid system.

How Should I Give CBD To My Cat?

If you choose Suzie’s CBD for cats, you can give it to your cat in the same way that you would any other treat. If you find that your cat is not drawn to the treat, you can also crumble it into your cat's food.. If you opt for Suzie’s CBD Cat tincture, the most common form of administration is to drop the oil directly on to your cat's food. If your cat is more particular with their food, you can mix the CBD oil with fish oil, or drop it onto a treat they love, to blend the taste of the CBD tincture and make it more palatable to your cat.
