What is the Difference Between CBD oil and Hempseed Oil?

When shopping for CBD many customers have trouble distinguishing between CBD oil and Hempseed oil. This is common with some companies purposefully trying to confuse consumers. It also can happen when retail spaces have an abundance of CBD, hemp, and hempseed products placed in the same spaces.

While both products offer their own unique benefits it’s important to understand hempseed oil does not contain the desired benefits from CBD. Consumers should choose each product based on their pet's needs and this means understanding what each product can offer individually.

In this blog post, we will further explain the differences between the two products to try to clear any confusion!

How are CBD oil and Hempseed Oil Related?

Both CBD oil and hempseed oil come from hemp plants.

Hemp is a botanical class of Cannabis sativa. Cannabis is an umbrella term for describing both marijuana and hemp. Like comparing squares and rectangles, all marijuana and hemp plants are cannabis, but not all cannabis plants are marijuana (or hemp, depending on which one you have in mind). Despite being related to marijuana plants - these plants are grown with a very low THC content (under the %0.3 legal limit set by the government) and a very high CBD content. Growing hemp this way makes it viable to be used for therapeutic and nutritional purposes and does not have the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana! It is also important to know that hemp is legal in all 50 states, unlike marijuana.

CBD is taken from the hemp plant through CO2 or ethanol extraction processes to receive an oil with high CBD content. CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant's flowers, stalks, and leaves to provide all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds that give CBD its helpful abilities.

Hempseed oil is created by cold pressing the seeds of the hemp plant into an oil. Because of the process and part of the plant used, hempseed oil has nearly nonexistent CBD content.

Different Benefits Between CBD oil and Hempseed Oil

Both oils have specific and helpful benefits! These benefits, however, are very different. Each product can be used to target individual areas of health.

With hempseed oil, you will see nutritional benefits. These benefits are derived from ingesting hempseed oil’s helpful omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid, and other nutritional antioxidants. It is also high in B vitamins and vitamin D.

With CBD oil the benefits seen are more therapeutic than nutritional.

These therapeutic elements are derived from CBD oil’s interactions with the body’s neurotransmitters that send signals to reduce inflammation, pain, and stress.

The way in which CBD interacts with the body is through the endocannabinoid system (commonly referred to as the ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors in the body that regulate and send signals that rule over a range of functions like memory, mood, immune response, stress, fear, and pain.

This distinction is a helpful one when thinking of hempseed oil and CBD oil. The benefits you see from hempseed are nutritional and more related to the fatty acids within them whereas CBD's main benefits come from the reactions they can help foster in the body.

Different Helpful Uses

The therapeutic uses of CBD oil are utilized to help with anxiety, allergies, joint issues, chronic pain, and more.

The nutritional uses of Hempseed oil are employed to help with skin issues, heart health, and blood pressure.

Purposeful Confusion

With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, the consumer market saw a flood of new products made from the hemp plant. This is because before the Farm Bill was introduced, all hemp and hemp products were classified as controlled substances. Now, hemp products are under a category introduced at the time of the bill classified as an "agricultural commodity."

After this new classification, retail stores saw a "green rush." While this had positive benefits with people and pets now able to access helpful and healing products it also created an oversaturated market.

Between an inundation of products and some companies taking advantage of consumer confusion, it became unclear for many when to choose Hempseed Oil and when to choose CBD oil.

The other confusion comes from the fact that hemp oil and hempseed oil are two separate products.

Hemp oil is nearly synonymous with CBD oil (they're not exactly the same) but is used by some companies looking to avoid the word “CBD” on their products.

Although this misperception is frustrating, we hope that sources like this post can help to clear up consumer confusion! The more unbiased information that is provided will allow more consumers to buy the products that will serve them best.
