Can Dogs Overdose on CBD?

It’s normal to worry about overdoing it when giving your pet a new product. However, CBD is a naturally occurring, non-addictive substance with no potential for overdose. CBD is also nontoxic and has a very low potential for negative side effects.

Trusted Research

The National Cancer Institute states, “Cannabinoid receptors aren’t found in the brain stem, there is no way it can change our key functions like breathing. Drugs like opioids, on the other hand, are located in the brainstem — which means it has the potential to interrupt things like blood circulation and breathing that can result in serious injury or death.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) found that CBD has, “no effect on a wide range of physiological and biochemical parameters or significant [negative] effects on animal behavior unless extremely high doses are administered.”

Indications to Lower Your Dose

Like any other supplement, all bodies react differently to CBD and require unique doses. While your pet can’t overdose on CBD, there are possible side effects that indicate you may need to lower the dose you are giving.

These side effects are limited to exaggerated lethargy, dry mouth or loose stool. These side effects do not indicate any danger to your pet but you may want to scale back the amount of CBD you are administering.

Quality Products Matter

Since we have discussed the indications of lowering your dose, it’s also important to explain another reason you may see side effects from CBD. Side effects are more common in lower-quality CBD products.

Because of this, be sure to select CBD pet products like Suzie’s that are USDA-certified organic, third-party lab tested, and utilize human ingredients.
